Description
A man, identified only as Steven, has been arrested for allegedly torturing his son for going to school with their gate key at the Trans Amadi area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The father of four was confronted by his neighbours in a viral video seen by our correspondent on Sunday.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Steven was later arrested and detained at the Amadi Police Station.
The rescued boy, while narrating the incident in the video, said his father did not listen to his cry for mercy.
He said, “When I went to school in the morning, my dad came and picked me up. He asked if I was with the gate key and I said no.
“So, he tied me up and said I was lying. He tried to use something to hit me, but I managed to run out from the gate. Then, I went to a compound, where they rescued me.
“When he tied me, someone in the compound told him to loose me. He didn’t, so they helped me.”
The Coordinator of the Rivers State Response Team on Violence against Women and Children, Tombari Dumka, condemned the incident, adding that teachers also had a role to play in checking child abuse.
The acting spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said she would find out from the Amadi Police Station and get back to our correspondent.
Iringe-Koko had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.
