Truck drivers revolt against harassment, data capturing in Imo State

11:39 Apr 12 2022 Imo State

Description
Truck drivers have revolted against the ongoing Biometrics Data Capturing exercise at Admiral Ndubuisi Kalu Square, New Owerri, Imo State.

The truck drivers, under the platform of Naze Timber Market Truck Drivers, in their numbers, stormed the Biometrics Data Capturing Centre, kicking against the exercise.

They demanded the intervention of Governor Hope Uzodinma.

DAILY POST had earlier gathered several ugly complaints against the Biometrics Data Capturing agents who operate at the former Heroes’ Square.

Speaking to journalists, the spokesman for Naze Timber Market Truck Drivers, Hon. Ikenna Njoku expressed concern over the impounding of the vehicles of the very peaceful and law abiding truck drivers whose duties only covers conveyance of goods and services in the State.

According to him, “truck drivers convey only building materials and cannot be associated with insecurity-related matters.

“As it is generally believed, data capturing is meant to ensure adequate security. I wonder why timber market truck drivers should be harassed on the streets of Owerri metropolis.

“We want to know if Imo State Government has enacted law for colour painting of trucks and Biometrics Data Capturing of the timber truck drivers.

“We also hereby express our total support and loyalty to the present ‘shared prosperity’ government of Governor Hope Uzodinma. And we are calling on him to come to our rescue, as we believe that with him, justice will prevail.”

However, the Imo City Biometrics Data Capturing Chairman, Mr. Anaelechi Ukanwunne, popularly called “Obowo”, declined addressing the aggrieved drivers, but insisted that the exercise is enshrined in Imo State Traffic Law No. 3 of 2007.
