Description
A man identified as Benjamin Enyeoha, from Obuogu in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Council of Rivers State, has accused the police at Obite station of compromising an alleged defilement case involving his 11-year-old niece and a 23-year-old man, known simply, as Mr. Raymond.
Enyeoha had petitioned the State Commissioner of Police (CP), Emeka Nwonyi, against the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) and others handling the case, accusing the officers of trying to sweep the matter under the carpet.
In the petition dated October 13, which was received by the office of the Commissioner, Enyeoha urged the Police Commissioner to transfer the case to an appropriate police station in Port Harcourt for proper action.
He alleged that the case was formally reported to Obite Police station on August 2023, and the culprit was arrested and detained, adding that he was given a police extract for a medical report.
Enyeoha explained that he took the extract to Port Harcourt Medical Centre with the girl, for a proper medical examination, and it was confirmed that the girl was defiled by the suspect, emphasising that a medical certificate was issued by Doctors without Border.
Consequently, the certificate was then submitted to the police station at Obite, on August 16, for proper action. He claimed that the police told him that the court was not in session advising them to wait. But after some weeks, having reminded the police to do justice to the case, they paid deaf ears and tried to sweep the case under the carpet.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the command, Grace Iringe-Koko, was yet to react to the claims at press time.
