Description
A man suspected to be a syndicate and identified as Philip, who allegedly defrauded unsuspecting job seekers at the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, have been nabbed.

It was gathered that the suspect, who usually promised his prospective victims of giving them employment, including academic and non-academic offers is said to have swindled people of between N200,000 to N450,000.

However, luck ran out on him on Monday when he was identified and reportedly nabbed at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

Narrating how the suspect was arrested, a rights advocate and National Coordinator of Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, said he (Philip) was nabbed after several months of being trailed.

Wiro said his organisation received reports of the fraudulent act last December, saying his team has been monitoring activities of the suspect.

He said fortunately on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, an executive member of the organisation cited the suspect at the premises of the UPTH and raised the alarm which attracted the hospital security, leading to the arrest.

“Some of the complainants came to the hospital and they identified him as the person that allegedly swindled them.

“So we are calling on the management of the Rivers State University to make a clear statement on the claims by the suspect that he is working with some powerful individuals in the institution to give some persons employment in the school.

“We also call on the state police command to thoroughly investigate the incident and if the suspect is found culpable he should be arraigned in court immediately to face trial.”

The rights advocate further said the suspect was being conveyed to the Choba Police station after he was handed over to the operatives by the institution security.

Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, one of his victims, Otavaino Stephens, said they believed the suspect because he told them he is a staff of the State owned university.

Stephens stated, “The man’s name is Phillip. He said he works with the RSU and that was why we were confident of working with him.
