A suspect identified as Nkereuwem Ekpo is now in custody for allegedly macheting his grandmother, Martina Akpan, to death at Udo Village in the Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident occurred on February 25 at about 2 p.m. It was also learnt that the suspect cut his grandmother’s neck while absconding with her money, worth N16,750.

When contacted, the state police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, noting that the suspect was paraded at a press briefing on Friday. He added that she was slain by the suspect on the farm while they were harvesting cassava stems.

He said, “On 25/02/2024 at about 1400hrs, one Nkereuwem Umoren Ekpo ‘M’ of Adiasim Ikot Udo Village in the Essien Udim L.G.A, was arrested for the murder of his grandmother, one Martina Udoudo Akpan ‘F’ of Onuk Nkop Ekpo Village, aged about 90 years.

“The suspect was alleged to have used a machete to cut his grandmother’s neck while they were cutting cassava stems on the farm, which eventually led to her death, and untied the sum of N16,750 from the deceased wrapper and absconded.”

In January, PUNCH Metro reported that a suspect identified as Ibrahim Salisu was taken into custody by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly macheting his brother, Malaimi Yellow, to death over an alleged sexual demand.
