The First Lady's Speech Raises Red Flags in Cross River State

05:26 Mar 10 2015 Calabar, Calabar Municipal, Cross River, Nigeria

Description
The First Lady, Patience Jonathan has been quoted as saying that anyone chanting "change", which is the slogan of the opposition APC, should be stoned. This statement was credited to her during a campaign stopover in Calabar. According to PM News "her reckless statement may put supporters of APC in danger, especially in view of the serial attacks on APC supporters in her hometown of Okrika, in Rivers state".

Analysis: CWC analysis supports PM News fears that such statements have the potential to put APC supporters at risk in view of the Okirika incident. It also has the potential to increase the incidences of violent conflict between the supporters of the two parties, if the members of the APC decide to go on the warpath, or at least prepare to defend themselves in view of the fact that the First Lady's statements may be carried out by PDP supporters.
